October 6, 2018 had something for everyone at the 2nd Company Governor's Horse Guard. Host to the Annual Western CT Police K-9 Challenge, exotic cars, hayrides, pumpkin painting for the kids, a meet and greet with two of the Cavalry horses, and of course food!

The K-9 Challenge was a fundraiser for the 2nd Co. Governor's Horse Guard hosted by the Newtown Kennel Club (NKC), the Friends of Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard, and The Hometown Foundation, Inc. Donations raised will help keep 2GHG one of the last active cavalry units in the country based in Newtown.

The Fairfield County Police Pipes & Drum Bagpipers began the challenge playing the National Anthem.

Participating Connecticut Police Departments were Newtown, Monroe, Dept. of Corrections, Wallingford, East Haven, Stamford, and Portland.  Emcees were Newtown K-9 Officer Felicia Figol, and K-9 Unit Officer K. Wells from the Fairfield Police Dept.

K-9s tackled the obstacle course, apprehended ‘suspects’, demonstrated their obedience skills, and competed for fastest dog bragging rights. Results Winners were based on cumulative points earned in the individual events of tactical obedience, obstacle course, simulations, suspect apprehension, and fastest dog.

Officer Stephen Ketchum “Top Dog” Award was given to State Police 1st Class Ed Anuszewski, with bloodhound Texas.

A Thank You For Your Dedication Award was given to Jon Nowinski for his emergency animal medical technician services.

Jane Dougherty Co-coordinator for CT Quilts of Valor wrapped Newtown Officier Matt Hayes in a handmade quilt  thanking him for his military service.  She also wrapped Officer Hayes' daughter in a smaller quilt.
